Mailbox Miseries Series

Part Two (cue the scary music!)

Written by Sara A. Harris

Apprehensively, I walk from the house in what can only be described as a forced saunter.  The wind billows, breathing through my raven tresses, the ill-fated corner draws nearer, and unexpectedly it’s a scene reminiscent of Hitchcock.  I pick up the paper, concealed in its yellow sheath, and as my hand reaches for the mailbox…  A wicked shudder befalls.  Veiled behind its shrill, hinged door a conglomeration of paper envelopes, creased one after another lingers and I will inevitably discover… versions of truth.

Mailer Demons.

Glancing, both fleeting and sidelong like a fiend of animosity, my expression embosses a sinister callous as police tape trails in the oppressive breeze while faded white chalk lines from the previous owner encircle my footsteps, reminding me. What fates have been lost to its postal malice?

The mailbox shadows … its loathsome lid agape as if a contemptuous, toothless mouth… it sneers at me. It’s laughing. I quickly pray to the “god of mailboxes” for nothing less than a miracle and by a vote of one, the odds are stacked against me.  In a twenty-second battlement of gallantry versus idiocy, I rescue an bizarre arrangement of precarious gait that obliterates this novel reclamation with fierce lucidity.  I’m terrified… nothing more, nothing less.

And so I crawl inside myself, lingering within the sullen void of unknown.  I see my mailbox once more.  it’s spindled limns reaching out, harboring a requiem of knowledge I have yet to face.

To Be Continued…
